Bud

30 X 48 Inches
Private Collection

Norbert “Bud” Schaefer was one of the most self effacing kind gentlemen that I have ever painted! It was a miracle that his lovely wife Carolyn ever convinced him to agree to this project

We started slowly doing a couple of oil sketches in their home at Wailea. He became more accustomed to me staring at him intently and so he agreed to come to the studio. Over the weeks we become great friends and had fun hanging out together during breaks in the many sittings.

Bud was a person with many interests. He
was a business man but also raced antique cars and collected cars of all ages displaying them in his Indianapolis garage. To reflect his racing interest his favorite Jaguar is shown in the background rendered with a palette knife so that the painting within the painting is seen as separate. The silk sports jacket represents his vocation while the helmet and background painting left no doubt where his love resided. The addition of the Hawaiian shirt and the reflection in the yellow helmet of our palm trees in the back yard gave a suggestion of their own Hawaiian residence.

Bud and Carolyn were greatly pleased with the painting. It hung over a fireplace in their Indiana home.
